Op dinsdag 1 november aanstaande is de Amerikaanse Americana-artiest Stephen Simmons te horen in Reitsma’s Roadhouse.

Stephen Simmons komt uit Woodbury, een klein stadje in Tennessee. Inmiddels woont hij alweer tien jaar in countrymuziekstad Nashville en heeft hij ondertussen zes albums afgeleverd. Op deze albums zijn invloeden te horen van Johnny Cash, Ryan Adams, John Prine en Tom Petty. Op zijn laatste album, The Big Show, zijn ook overeenkomsten te vinden met Van Morrison en Tom Waits. 

Dat een Amerikaanse artiest ‘zomaar’ naar de studio in Menaam komt, heeft te maken met de samenwerking van presentator Arjen Reitsma met Marthijn de Wit van Radio en TV Noord-Oost Friesland uit De Westereen. De Wit heeft een americana/roots rockprogramma op RTV NOF en heeft al vele gasten in zijn programma over de vloer gehad. ‘Het is voor zowel de artiest als voor ons als programmamakers ideaal om artiesten in samenwerking een sessie te laten spelen. De artiest pakt twee radiostations in één keer en wij gebruiken materiaal van die sessie voor onze eigen programma's’, zegt Reitsma.  

De reden dat dit soort Americana-artiesten langs kunnen komen is vaak gerelateerd aan het feit dat ze in de buurt zijn voor hun tour. Voor dergelijke artiesten is namelijk wel een bepaalde markt in Europa. Grote namen in de countrymuziek komen zelden of nooit naar Europa omdat ze in hun thuisland al veel verdienen. De kans dat ze hier verlies draaien met hun tour vanwege mindere bekendheid is veel te groot.

Stephen Simmons behoort echter tot de bekendere Americana-artiesten, heeft al enige naam in Nederland en al op de grote podia gestaan.
